Yet the industry remains stuck in pre-digital escrow, relying on banks and lawyers to enforce terms that could be executed trustlessly.

Context: The Existing Transfer Framework

Football transfers currently operate under FIFA’s Transfer Matching System (TMS), a centralized database that records player movements but does not handle payment settlement. Clubs negotiate directly, often using third-party escrow agents—typically law firms or licensed financial intermediaries. The buyer deposits the fee (or a first installment) into an escrow account; upon completion of medical exams and contract registration, the funds are released to the seller.

This process is slow, opaque, and prone to disputes. If a player fails a medical after the deposit, the buyer may have to sue to recover funds. If the seller’s bank account is frozen due to regulatory issues, payments can stall for months. Contrarian: Smart Contracts Can’t Handle Subjective Performance

The most common pushback I hear is that football transfers are too complex for deterministic logic. What if a player underperforms? What if he is injured? Should the club be able to claw back fees? These are valid concerns, but they miss the point: the escrow contract does not judge performance—it only verifies that agreed-upon events happened.
